A key word that you will see:

Fragmentation: a mental process where a person becomes intensely emotionally focused on one aspect of themselves, such as “I am angry” or “no one loves me,” to the point where all thoughts, feelings and behavior demonstrate this emotional state, in which, the person does not or is unable to take into account the reality of their environment, others or themselves and their resources. This is a term that my therapist and I use and is on the continuum of dissociation.

Starbuck's Coffee "The Way I See It" #36

On Friday, this is the quote that was on my therapist's coffee cup from Starbuck's:

"Mother-love is not inevitable. The good mother is a great artist ever creating beauty out of chaos."

--Alice Randall, Novelist, The Wind Done Gone,
and first black woman to write a No. 1 country song.

So, what are your thoughts and feelings about this quote? Agree, disagree, happy, sad, angry, grateful, thankful, etc...

Stop and think before scrolling down to see my thoughts.

Well, when my therapist read this I was shocked given the things that we had been talking about regarding my mother. I thought, "that is true it is not inevitable and what a profound statement about being a mother for it is from chaos that she helps her child to grow." My therapist said, "your mother took beauty and created chaos." Makes me sad and tearful, but he is right.

I have to agree with the quote...unfortunately. Looooooong story, and since my mom reads my blog, it's probably never going to appear there...

My mother, too, made chaos out of beauty. She made chaos out of EVERYTHING!!!! And, then blamed me for the chaos!

WC ~ it is too bad that you can't be honest because your mother reads your blog...could you start an anonymous one?

Tamara ~ I like how we can relate so much. I know exactly what you mean.

I wonder if this quote was more a reference to nature, like Mother Earth or something...

In doing a search on this, all I was able to find out is that this was a quote out of the book mentioned which is a parody of "Gone With The Wind."

However, I did find a yoga place that uses the quote and developmental psychologist using the exact words in describing mother attachments/bonding.

Either, way I thought it was thought provoking.

Hi, This is an interesting idea, asking how this quote is perceived by others. ((hugs)) For me, just as a person, I like the quote (meaning removing motherhood from it)because I try and look for beauty in all situations, mostly as a result of a chaotic childhood.
I was determined to raise my daughters in a calm environment and we had that, though the hospital years with my daughter have been trying at times.

Anyway, take care,
Stephany
