Greenwood wrote this in 1983 as a patriotic song about his country, which he clearly loves. It was never a big hit, but it quickly became Greenwood's signature song. Many conservative politicians, including George Bush, have used it in their campaigns, and it became popular again in 1991 when the US went to war with Iraq. The song got a lot of airplay after September 11, 2001, as patriotism became a priority in America.
God Bless The U.S.A.
by Lee Greenwood
If tomorrow all the things were gone,
I’d worked for all my life.
And I had to start again,
with just my children and my wife.
I’d thank my lucky stars,
to be livin here today.
‘Cause the flag still stands for freedom,
and they can’t take that away.
And I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I wont forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.
And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.
From the lakes of Minnesota,
to the hills of Tennessee.
Across the plains of Texas,
From sea to shining sea.
From Detroit down to Houston,
and New York to L.A.
Well there's pride in every American heart,
and its time we stand and say.
That I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I wont forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.
And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.
And I’m proud to be and American,

the conservitives may trout this out for thier ouwn agendas. I still believe that this song speakes for all americans.at least I hope so. I served this country during the Viet-Nam conflict. Both my Father and My Father-in-law served during WW 2.I have had numous family member that have been in the service as well. I believe in supportint our Military100% the government and their policies, well that is a horse of a different color.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.Big time Hugs and God's blessings headed you way!
For as many problems and complaints that everyone has about this country, I am proud to be an American and this song, bottom line, is what is really important. Thank you to you and your family for serving in the military...I wish we could turn things back and that vets would have the same respect that WWI and some of WWII had when they returned. Despite the policies of government, bottom line again, is that people serve and they deserve credit, honor and praise, not political battles when they return.
I love this song! Its wonderful, ty for sharing, also thanks for all the other posts regarding the forth! I remember those short skits on saturday mornings!
Hugs, i hope your forth was a great one!
Thanks, Tracy. My fourth was just a relaxing day except the PTSD kicked in really badly in the evening with the fireworks, but my husband just laid by my side and stroked my hair as I curled up next to him...very nice and comforting...good trick to cuddle, huh? I hope you had a good one.
